When the bathroom shelf no longer holds…

What was that noise?

We were quite astonished when it suddenly rumbled mightily while we were driving out of the bathroom. It sounded like a marten was running wild in the bathroom. Of course, we stopped right away to see what happened.

In fact, the bathroom shelf “fell off” and the entire contents were distributed in the bathroom. A quick glance and the diagnosis, or rather the cause, was clear.

The small retaining lip on which the shelf sits and finds support has come loose from the wall. Now, one could even begin to imagine that Volkswagen would have screwed this strip in place instead of gluing it. 🙄 It wouldn’t be so exciting then, of course, and the bathing utensils wouldn’t fly through the car while driving. Now it is as it is, this bar is only glued.

Over the miles, this ledge has come loose and can no longer support the shelf once it is “loaded”.

The solution

At least someone in Hannover recognized the problem and sent a TPI on the subject to the dealers. So if your vehicle still has warranty, no problem. Make an appointment with the Volkswagen partner, wait two months for the appointment and the shelves and their retaining lips are glued back on.

If you no longer have a warranty or want to quickly fix the whole thing yourself, it’s not a big problem.

Parts needed

All you need are these parts:

  • Original VW Audi Seat Skoda universal cleaner cleaning solution 250ml with the spare part number D00940104.

Alternatively, of course, any other isopropanol reiner will work, such as this one for around $14 from Jeff’s store.

  • Plastic primer with the spare part number D366PR1A1, the original VW primer costs an incredible 45 euros.

If you don’t insist, you will again find parts in Jeff’s store.
    Ber-Fix 5ml plastic primer for 11 euros.
  • Applicator rods, here the spare part number is D00950025. However, a Q-tip will probably also work for applying the primer.
  • The tape Volkswagen uses is 3M Scotch Pressure Sensitive Tape.

Implementation

The procedure is quite simple.

In the first step you remove the shelf from the bathroom, if the retaining lip still hangs a bit on the bathroom wall, you can simply pull it off.

After that, the surface of the lip must be cleaned and freed from glue residues, for this you use the above-mentioned isopropanol.

Once the surface is clean and free of grease, the plastic primer is applied using the applicator pads.

The primer is a kind of sandpaper, which ensures the connection to the adhesive strip. Without it, the lip will not hold permanently, even with new tape. Important, the wall in the bathroom should also be treated with the primer, more precisely, the place where the lip. Since we use double-sided tape, this side would not hold without treatment either. Please be careful when handling the primer, this is extremely harmful to health!

Once the primer has dried, you can apply the new tape to the retaining lip and then reinstall it in the bathroom. From now on you should have peace with the shelves in the bathroom.
