Customer statement and workshop findings
Customers report a broken trap or a defective drain in the shower. These complaints could be verified in the workshops, with visible damage to the trap often being found.
Technical background
The damage to the siphon can be attributed to various causes, whereby the improper use of certain cleaning agents in particular can lead to problems. These include
– Chloride-containing cleaning agents: Products such as disinfectants, stain removers or bleaching agents that contain chloride can make the material of the trap brittle and cause cracks.
– Acetic acid + ethyl alcohol: These chemicals, which are often used in cleaning agents, can also lead to material damage.
– Window cleaner (concentrate): These agents can also damage the siphon.
Typical damage caused by these substances are brittle cracks, smooth and shiny fractures and numerous breaks in the material.
Cleaning instructions and precautionary measures
Volkswagen recommends only cleaning the siphon mechanically with water or a wire brush. It is particularly important not to use excessive force when unscrewing the siphon, e.g. for cleaning. The screw should only be tightened and loosened by hand, as excessive mechanical force can also lead to damage.
