Toll for motor vehicles over 3.5 tons coming on 01.07.2024 – But does this also apply to motorhomes / campers?

From July 2024, the toll in Germany for cars/trucks will be reduced from 7.5 to 3.5 tons. However, motorhomes are exempt from the toll.

From 01.07.2024, the existing toll for motor vehicles / trucks in Germany will be reduced from 7.5 to 3.5 tons.

We have received a few questions on this topic, asking whether this toll also applies to all motorhomes with a maximum permissible mass of more than 3.5 tons. The good news first: If your vehicle is registered as a motorhome, the toll still does not apply. This means that no tolls are payable for the Grand California on German roads.

This is what it says on the Toll Collect website:

“On July 1, 2024, the toll obligation will be introduced for vehicles with a technically permissible maximum mass (tzGm) of more than 3.5 tons. The toll obligation only applies to vehicles that are intended for or used for road haulage. Vehicle combinations are only subject to tolls if the tzGm of the towing vehicle is over 3.5 tons.”

Important here is the statement: … which are intended or used for road haulage.

This only applies if the vehicle is registered as a truck. But beware! Some self-built vans / motorhomes could be affected if they have been registered as trucks to date.

So don’t panic in your Grand California, you’ll continue to drive toll-free in Germany, even if it weighed 5 tons 😊
