Screen pixelated when using Google Maps under Apple Car Play

The error only occurs when using Apple Car Play, especially when using Google Maps. Complaints about this issue are piling up in various Internet forums.

The error first appeared with the update to iOS 16. The error still does not occur when using an iPhone with iOS 15. Thus, there has been a change in Apple’s operating system, as some new features have also moved into Car Play with iOS 16.

The error only seems to affect vehicles from the VAG group, neither in a BMW, Mercedes or Citroen does this problem occur when using Google Maps via Apple Car Play.

A quick solution to the problem does not seem to be in sight, even a look at the Apple forum confirms the problem:

Here, over 600 users claim to have the same problem.

In the meantime, the problem is also known at Volkswagen, so the manufacturer created a TPI with the number 2069359/2 on this topic on February 22, 2023. It states:

When using a navigation app via App Connect (mirroring of selected smartphone apps on the infotainment system), the map section on the display panel of the infotainment system is displayed in pink/blue/pixelated ….. The complaint is particularly noticeable when using the smartphone app “Google Maps”.

However, it says in the further course:

REPAIR put on hold! Please put the repair on hold, please do not attempt to repair! This TPI will be updated as soon as a solution is available!

Thus, there is currently no solution to this problem, but at least the issue is now on the radar and a solution is being worked on.

Using Apple Maps, on the other hand, runs without any problems. As soon as there is an official solution from Apple or Volkswagen, we will report on it.
