Unfortunately, however, the tethers are not designed for this, according to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The service document with the number 2064994/1 states the following
The bed must not be folded up and secured with the belt while driving. In this position, the tether will be damaged.
It goes on to say:
In such a case of damage, the repair cannot be settled under warranty.
So you should expect that if a tether strap breaks, it will NOT be replaced under Volkswagen’s warranty.
