Italy abolishes the warning sign again, at least almost

Anyone who regularly goes on vacation in Italy will be familiar with them: the red and white warning signs that can be seen on many cars and motorhomes with mounted bike racks. Until now, this sign was mandatory for all bike racks attached to the trailer coupling – a regulation that many travelers are familiar with and that has sometimes presented challenges.

However, a change in the law, which came into force on 21.01.2025, means that this obligation no longer applies to bicycle carriers on the trailer coupling. This means that anyone traveling to Italy with bicycles on the rear rack can dispense with the warning sign in future – not only saving time, but also another item on the vacation preparation list.

Attention: The new regulation does not apply to all carriers!

The change in the law only affects bike carriers that are mounted on the trailer coupling. If, like us, you use a rear carrier that is attached to the rear of the vehicle, the obligation to affix the red and white warning sign remains in force.

So, load up the bikes and off you go on vacation – without the old familiar board, provided you have a towbar carrier!
