How many Grand Californias are actually out there? This question has been on my mind for a few months now, we felt that the Grand California was no longer a rare guest on the campgrounds of this nation.
So I invested a little research – work and thanks to the German order at the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (short KBA) I found a good source of information. A request to Volkswagen itself has unfortunately remained unanswered, I would have liked to know directly from the manufacturer how many Grand California have been built. Maybe there will be an answer to this at some point 😊. But now to the numbers. For information, the KBA always publishes the registration figures one year retrospectively, i.e. this is data from the year 2021. However, I plan to update this post as soon as the 2022 numbers are available.
Motorhomes in general
In the course of my research, I naturally came across general figures for the RV sector. Therefore, I would like to start with this statistic.
In 2021 (as of January 2022), 767,325 motor homes were registered in Germany.

Certainly we have all noticed the trend around the motorhome, which is how we eventually came to the Grand California. But especially when you compare the figures from 2021, you get a sense of why the industry is doing so well.

This corresponds to a 13.7 percent increase in registrations, and it is certain that this trend will continue this year.

If we leave aside the more than 800 percent growth directly after market launch, we can easily see where the journey is going and why it is becoming increasingly difficult to get a workshop appointment, for example. From 2020 to 2021, Volkswagen could increase registrations in Germany by more than 120 percent. This trend is expected to have continued this year, which is reflected in the current delivery time, among other things.
These figures only refer to Germany, which is certainly the largest sales market.
