Unfortunately, almost everyone is familiar with the problem of the heater turning itself off in the Grand California. As if by magic and without any warning, the heater simply goes out, without any fault or discernible reason. It does not matter which heater is installed, gas or diesel, with or without electric heating elements. It just shuts down! If you haven’t had it yet, consider yourself lucky.
There is currently NO official solution for the problem from Volkswagen! Please don’t be swayed by any forums, there is no update that fixes this bug or any special watch setting etc.
There is one thing that we have now been officially told is a “workaround” and that is the separation between CU and heater control. Sounds complicated at first, but it’s not. Behind the small service flap, which is located in the dinette seat, is the control unit of the Truma heater. The CU of the Grand California is connected to this, this connection must be disconnected. This can be done without tools and takes about ten seconds. If you have removed the cable, the Truma heater can only be controlled via the display under the seat, but the heater runs through without error.
In the picture you can see not only my great arm, but especially the back of the Truma control and the free slot. This slot is the said connection between CU and heater, pull the plug located there and be happy. After disconnecting, the heater will be grayed out in the camper unit, so you definitely have the control to have removed the correct cable.
If we hear anything about a working solution from Volkswagen, we will of course write an update about it.
