Defective battery? How to program the replacement battery

At some point, the day will come when your AGM battery has reached the end of its life cycle and no longer works.
Now you have exactly two options:

  1. You drive to your trusted garage and have the battery replaced there.
  2. Or you can replace the battery yourself.

Replacing the battery is not rocket science, but there is one crucial point to bear in mind: Modern motor vehicles are computers on wheels, and almost everything in them is monitored – including the battery.
The car knows exactly which battery is installed and learns its charging and discharging behavior.
This means it can always react correctly to voltages and control charging efficiently.

If the battery is now replaced, this behavior changes.
In order for the vehicle to understand why the new battery behaves differently, it is important to teach the new battery into the system.

It may sound complicated at first, but it’s not.
All you need is a Veepeak, the Car Scanner Pro app, battery replacement tools and, of course, a new battery.
Once the old battery has been removed and the new one is in place, teach the battery as follows.

In this short video you can see the steps required to install your new AGM battery in the Crafter / Grand California.

  1. Connect Veepeak with Car Scanner
  2. Establishing a connection with the vehicle
  3. Select “Coding & Service”
  4. Select “Battery”
  5. Select serial number and enter e.g. 1234567890

Done!

Note:

If you have replaced the battery 1:1, you only need to enter a sequence of numbers under “Serial number”, as in this example 1234567890.
If you have changed the capacity, this must also be set under “Battery – Battery capacity”.
The same applies to the type if you have changed from AGM to lithium or used a different manufacturer.

Don’t have a Veepeak yet?
No problem -> HERE <

There is a suitable AGM ->Here< – and it is certainly 2.50 marks cheaper than from VW directly.

    Hi there,
As the GC has 2 batteries how do I know which one I am “Coding”? When using the “Car Scanner” app it does not specify which battery it is changing the settings on.
    Many thanks,
    Nikki
