#4 Trollstigen Norway

We used the Easter days and were with our Grand California on family visit, so there was not so much to read here in the last few days. To get things going again, we want to share with you a “must see” from Norway.

The Trollstigen

About 20 kilometers south of Ã…ndalsnes is probably the most famous road in Norway, the Trollstigen (German Troll Ladder), which takes you through the Trolltindene mountains.

Trolls play a major role in Norse mythology, and the path along Provincial Road 63 is lined with these mythical colleagues. Everywhere you will find signs and statues. Okay this is of course the total Turinap, on the mountain top there is then the obligatory store in which you can then buy everything in accessories in troll form. You don’t need it, at least we don’t! But in general, the Trollstige is of course very touristy and completely crowded, in the year about 600,000 people drive over this road. But if you plan a trip out of season, in spring or fall, you may be lucky and be almost alone on the viewing platform.

The view is simply insane.

But be careful, in the winter months the road is completely closed. From about the end of October to mid-May you will have bad cards.

The ascent or descent takes you over eleven curves past the Stigfossen waterfall. Each of these eleven curves was a true masterpiece at the time of its construction, which began in 1928. The road was finally opened on July 31, 1936 by King Haakon VII. With a maximum gradient of nine percent, you’ll be climbing quite high, overcoming a difference in altitude of 405 meters along the entire route. The above-mentioned Stigfossen will accompany you for an incredible 320 meters.

The road is basically single-lane, but very easy to drive on due to various alternative bays. Be sure to note the maximum vehicle length of 13.5 meters. So to the Morello drivers among you, ATTENTION 😅.

If you’re in Norway, take the time to drive by here. It is definitely a true experience.
